Meet Aliza, an incredibly hard worker who paves her own path instead of walking down the same one as everyone else. She is a software developer, working for a very large company, and she is crushing it!
Hi! I'm Aliza. I am a Software Developer with a specialty in investment banking technology at a global bank based in London! (Our NY branch is located in midtown Manhattan.)
Did you always know you wanted to pursue a career in software development?
No. I had no idea what I wanted to do when I was in high school or seminary. Right before I began college I went to a career counselor to get some clarity, and she actually tried to convince me not to go into this field because it's hard to keep up with trends when you take a break to raise children. Later, I spoke to a frum woman in the industry and she explained how it's possible to be a mom and software developer at the same time if you put in the effort.
What's the most challenging part about being a Software Developer?
You constantly learn more about the technologies because there will never be just one language. You can be faced with a new puzzle every day and need to utilize different language and skill to solve it.
What's the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I get to build and create something so much bigger than our minds can comprehend just by coding. When it all comes together it's an AHHH moment!
What's the most valuable lesson you've learned so far?

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Chances are people around you don't know either and they're masking it.
If you can impart one message to the business you support, what would it be?
Very often they want things now but they need to be patient. What we are building is worth the time and effort to get done correctly. - if we rush it will be a much bigger problem in the future.
Finish the sentence: A Software Developer's job is never done because…
…there is always more to do! We are always overworked with too many tasks in backlog haha!
In my purse you will always find:
Noise canceling headphones for my commute and boxing gloves for my workout class after a long day.
What's one subject/class you wish you were taught in high school/sem?
Coding all the way!
What's an insider pro tip you wish someone had told you before entering this line of work?
Learn Linux - it's an operating system similar to Windows that's very helpful to know. If you're working at a bank, chances are you'll be working on a server that uses Linux.
Has it ever been hard for you to balance your Yiddishkeit and your job? How did you?
The hardest part is we are expected to deploy code over the weekend (Friday night/Shabbos). Most of my coworkers fill in for me on Friday night and I work late after Shabbos or Sunday to make up the time.
Also, at my first job, I worked with a team that hardly accommodated for kosher when they went on company outings or hosted events. Many times I couldn't join them and It made me feel uncomfortable. Now I have a team that exclusively goes out to kosher places so I'm always included which is really amazing!
What is your parting message to the Thrivers?
When I came back from seminary, my only goal was to get a degree (in anything) and get married. But then I started coding and I got a job at a bank where I learnt a lot and it was able to take my career farther than I ever dreamed. You can have a real career and still live a balanced life. Always be open to possibilities and don't wait - take the first step.
That's an incredible message - one that we wish was more well known for girls who are just starting out. You never know where life can take you, so take the time to explore your passions. You never know where they might lead! Aliza can be contacted via The Thrive Tribe page.
